Occasionally I miss a chance siberian seedling until it's about to bloom
and then I let it go to see what I get. Overwhelmingly it's nothing
special, usually inferior to any named parents nearby and out it goes.
I also religiously weed out any chance seedlings that fall very near a
named variety so I don't end up with mixed clumps. So, a year or so ago
I missed the baby seedling growing about 8 inches away from a peony and
when I did notice it last year I left it alone. This year it bloomed
and was spectacular with deep blue blooms held high above the foliage. I
seriously looked to see if I could possibly have planted it and not
labeled it but no luck, and no way would I have planted any siberian
that close to and in front of a peony.
Yesterday I moved it to another area to see how it continues. The
leaves reach my shoulder, I'm 5'5", stand stiffly upright and are a
glaucus green. The stems are the size of pencils. It seems to me it
must be a tetraploid, if it's not a tet it's a dip on steroids!
In the bed at about 10" distance is Dewful, which it looks like. Nearer
is Ewen (non blooming for several years and divided last year),
Roanoke's Choice (sparse bloom so divided last year), Super Ego (which
hasn't bloomed it 4 years), and Vi Luihn (also non blooming for several
years). Obviously I need to do some dividing in the bed......
Now my question, can tetraploidy occur naturally? I mean can bees do
it? Would Ewen produce a deep blue seedling with flowers not at all
like itself? How do the rest of you handle a seedling that is drop dead
gorgeous but of unknown parentage when everything else in the garden is
carefully named?
