I. versicolors like lots of water (that's how they grow in the wild) but can 
tolerate the same conditions as siberian irises - ordinary garden soil with 
watering during prolonged periods of drought if possible.  If you are 
planting a bareroot start of either a versicolor or siberian you should water 
daily until it is well established, i.e. until you tug on it and can feel the 
roots hold the plant in the ground.  Then over the first winter put a  brick 
on it to keep it from frost heaves.  From then on it should be fine.
