I put here for you fragment from "The Iris" by Brian Mathew, which
will give you full comprehension how to grow versicolors:
"I.versicolor is a very widespread plant of ineastern North America
from eastern Canada southwards to Texas. It grows in marshes, swamps,
wet meadows and on lake shores and flowers in May, June or July. As a
garden plant I.versicolor presents no problems and may be grown either
in the water garden or in aherbaceous border if plenty of humus is
incorporated in the soil...."
From this description you may know versicolors are water loving
plants. I grow several of them even in sandy soil and water them
plenty, so they feel not very well, but flower each year. The plants
in my case are not robust as they could be in better conditions.
