{Disarmed} Fwd: SSI Publicity

Hi all;

Received this message from Jim Morris, section liaison  for AIS bulletin and guest editor of the July issue. His  first paragraph is illustrative of what we are talking about. I'm not sure to whom overtures were made - but we can't afford not to follow up on such offers.  At the spring board meeting Bob (my husband), offered to write a piece on Siberians for the bulletin on behalf of the society  - so that is in the works.

I know that there were few  Siberian guests in Oklahoma  (not the most hospitable place for them)  my note  was an observation that there was no mention of Sibs in any context ( except for the page cited) in the bulletin - which is our failure. Nothing happening - nothing reported!!

So , we're talking - lets keep at it and have some fun with it all - that's what it's about.

Cheers Judy

Judy Hollingworth,

A couple of your folks sent me a copy of this posting.  As AIS Section Liaison Consultant I have made overtures to SSI in the past without much in the way of response.

As the Guest Editor for the July AIS Bulletin I offered space in the July and October (Kelly Norris will guest edit) issues for special coverage for each of the sections and cooperating societies.  The only two to respond affirmatively so far are SPCNI (July, page 89) and MIS (there will be coverage in October along with reporting of the MIS Convention in Lincoln, NE).  Those who respond get coverage.  I applaud your efforts to get something going in SSI.  Everything starts with an idea and good leadership.

The Section Meeting at the AIS Convention is a good conduit for genus and administrative discussions.  I have heard feedback that the one in Oklahoma City was one of the best.  Susan Griggs represented SSI very well.  My Section Happenings column is for the specific purpose of providing an on-going means of publicity for the sections and cooperating societies.  I scan many, many publications in an effort to provide equal opportunity to all.  But I don't see everything and my sense of genus news, importance or novelty might be different from others.  So if you succeed in finding someone to "browse regional, local and international newsletters for interesting tidbits to feed to AIS," by all means have that person forward their suggestions to me.  Worthy information will be printed.

As to the lack of Siberian coverage at Convention in the July issue, it's pretty simple.  There were guest Siberian plantings in but three gardens (Hampton, Petal Pushers and Stout) and from only three hybridizers.  No guest Siberians were planted at the Master planting at OSU, nor were there any at the Capitol planting.  I only recall seeing one guest Siberian in bloom.  My wife Jean, who takes extensive and detailed notes at all gardens we visit, wrote up but one Siberian and that was Hollingworth seedling 97B1B27 in the Stout Garden, "Tet, royal purple with white, white zonal and lavender style arms."  People can't write about what is not there or that does not bloom.

Good luck in breeding some excitement into SSI!  May it turn out as beautiful as 'Jeweled Crown' or 'Somebody Loves Me'.

For the love of iris,

Jim Morris

Hi Everyone:

As the new president of SSI i feel that we are really hurting as a
society because we do not have anyone in charge of publicity or with
an in to the AIS powers that be to get us much coverage in the AIS
bulletins. For a start we need someone willing to browse regional,
local and international newsletters for interesting tidbits to feed
to AIS and to SSI for that matter.

If you think this isn't important - look what prominence the Median
Society has acheived - putting out a spectacular 50th Anniversary
magazine, creating the Ben Hager Cup for AIS Conventions - a special
article on medians in the current AIS Bulletin in addition to
excellent coverage in the garden writeups. ( The only mention of sibs
that I found in the July Bulletin is one line on page 76 )!!!

Excitement breeds excitement and we really need to generate some.
Despite many overtures we still do not have anyone willing to take on
the job of editor of SSI. We really need to get moving - we have
started with an upgrading of our website.

So if I haven't contacted you about either the publicity or editor's
job - please don't take it personally - I probably didn't know you
were available - contact me ASAP.

Also sibrob is an excellent forum for a discussion of goals for SSI
-pleeeeeeeeeeeeease give it some thought and let's get talking.

Cheers Judy
