Re: Commercial success

From John Coble, Ensata Gardens, zone 5, Michigan.

Siberian sales are good and increasing yearly at Ensata Gardens.

Siberians tend to grow and multiply faster than one can sell them.
Siberians were tissue cultured by Klehm Nurseries to hurry new varieties into
market in large quantities through their color catalog. They have since gone
out of business.

You are welcome to go into the wholesale business with Siberian iris. There
is no one out there, except the Dutch nurseries, to give you competition. I'd
advise one to choose varieties the Dutch are not selling. Good luck in
choosing the varieties that the public and landscapers will want!! Good luck in
choosing even one variety that is as hardy, easy to grow, easy to bloom, or
better than Caesar's Brother.*

If you would like to consider tissue culture, investigate the possibilities.
One add in the recent Daylily Journal, a company in Canada, will do the
tissue culture (on daylilies) for $250 (whether it works or not), then supply you
with 100 plantlets in one year for an additional $400. You will have to grow
them on for another year or two and not lose any. Then remember, the
landscaper or nurseries will want them potted and labeled (color label for nurseries)
for wholesale prices of about $2.00 each. Oh, and you may have to arrange
truck shipment .......... did your secretary get that address correct?

No wonder some would suggest that a non profit organization "invest" in it.

*This Robin could be the place to conduct a "Poll" for canidates of Siberian
iris that should help a wholesale market to the public succeed. The SSI
Popularity Poll would be a good starting place, but remember that many votes are
for just a "pretty face". The whole plant must compete with Ceasar's Brother.
I would suggest using Carol Warner's point scoring system.
