I have an idea how to introduce new colors in I. sibirica (2n=28). The
idea is derived from black currant and gooseberry. As you possibly know
there are fertile hybrides between black currants and gooseberries
called Josta. There were also attempts to include certain properties of
gooseberries in black currants. For example a tetraploid black currant
was crossed with diploid gooseberry to get triploid plants. This diploid
plants were again backcrossed to diploid black currant. By this it was
for example possible to transfer the resistance of gooseberry to rust to
black currant. The first step (tetraploid x diploid) only needs a smal
number of seeds, the second step (backcrossing to either diploid or
tetraploid) needs a much more number of seedlings as most part of the
genes of the gooseberry was eliminated. But that's not about I. sibirica
you'll say. My idea is to cross tetraploid I. sibirica (2n=56) with
either diploid red I. fulva or yellow, red or black diploid I. sibirica
with 2n=40 to try to trasnfer these colors to I. sibirica either diploid
or more difficult to tetraploid ones. What do you think about?
Greetings
Martin
