Ginny;
You mention having 4 distinct cultivars of Iris fulva. Are you aware that you can register these? Indeed ‘Marvell Gold’, a collected yellow, just recently won the Founders’ of SIGNA Medal for being a good garden plant. Do you know whether your yellow is as good or better? Probably not. Until clones are distributed such, that they are grown in a variety of gardens, who would know. The main purpose of having garden awards for species is to encourage registration and introduction of a variety of clones. Until there are several to compare to, it is impossible to say that what we have is the best clone for our gardens. Although there are a few red clones of fulva that have been named and introduced, many have been lost through the years and new ones need to be named. I am not sure there is any “white” fulvas that have ever been named. Even if this wasn’t a charmer in its own right it sounds like something that would be interesting for breeding. Don’t be shy about registering iris. It is
the only way we have of documenting the diversity in our gardens. Registration does not imply a recommendation for awards, a common misconception. Registration only means it is a different ,interesting plant, that someone would want to grow in their garden, perhaps for curiosity or for breeding purposes. One of the reasons why the awards system doesn’t work well for some groups is that they are to selective on what they are willing to register an introduce. Not every plant has to be a champion. Of course some pretentious breeders may never share their color breaks and interesting plants because they think everything THEY introduce has to be perfect. But then they complain that so many deserving irises don’t get awards.
