New hybrid Irises

Greetings to all,

I agree with Ken's encouraging reply to Martin. Hybridizing can
always use more advocates. Progress is made when new crosses are
tried.

In our garden, we have new guest seedlings from our good friends Mary
Betts here in Maine and Christy Hensler who lives in Washington,
among other breeder's trial plants. Mary sent us divisions of her
cross between a tet Siberian, ORVILLE FAY, and Iris Versicolor, for
which she has a Plant Patent applied for. Christy sent copies of
three significant new plants. These are crosses involving Siberian
and Japanese Irises she feels were successful and are very special.
We are anxious to see all of these here and believe they will be
wonderful new specimens in the gardens. Quite likely, we'll see
other exceptional seedlings in gardens of friends we visit during the
coming season. New seedlings are a fine treat to see.

Last year I sent Martin hand crossed tet Siberian seeds for his wide
crosses involving Siberians. Time will tell if these and other
experimental work will produce viable seed. I certainly hope so. By
all means, make some of your own interesting crosses this year.
Lovely new flowers come from the basic efforts of people like you and
I.

We wish you all a New Year filled with prosperity, good health and
good cheer.

Jeff and Joyce (only 2" of snow on the ground here, which is
melting in very mild weather, for now.)
