SIGNA seedlist will be a bit late this year. We had some very late seed
arrive from Russia and called the seedlist back from the printer to put on an
addendum. Don't like to do this, but it seemed necessary since the seed was
quite interesting - including wild collected sibiricas. The list is sent
from the West Coast so that everyone has a fair chance to get their order
back to the East Coast. I believe the list has already gone out to the
foreign members and should be sent to the U.S. members soon.
On the subject of purple leaved siberians - neither Marty or I know of any.
There are many that have red or purple leaf bases that are only visible on
careful examination. Of course there are also irises like Frosted Cranberry
that have very red spathes. Red leaves would certainly be a lovely feature
and something to breed for. Perhaps you are remembering Jennifer Hewitt's x
robusta (versicolor x virginica) Dark Aura (formerly Virginica Deluxe), which
has very reddish purple leaves in the spring. Greg Speichert of Crystal
Palace Perennials has also reported a red-leaved virginica. There are also
other x robustas that have some red on the lower leaves, such as one called
'Beet Root', though it is not registered.
