I disagree (not about the weather). I have better luck with spring shipped
plants; I just noticed several of the plants I received last fall were dead
- none of the spring-shipped ones. However, I don't plant these in the
ground - all go in pots, where I can move them into the shade if necessary,
and the soil is not as heavy as the clay in my garden. The next year I
might plant them out; I will see how they have grown when they come back up
soon.
The reason I do this is that I feel most losses in our area come from
rotting roots in the winter, and fall-shipped plants may not have made much
root growth, since the plants often are upset with out conditions. Of
course, your situation is not identical to mine [where are you, exactly];
but I offer these ideas for your experimentation.
It can be 100 degress here even in April (or not!).
