I had a grass fire in my flower bed one spring (before the leaves were green) and only a small
portion of the siberian clump grew - most of it was destroyed.

Well Bill, it would depend on what stage the plants are in.  I burn off my
foliage one the ground is in a hard freeze, and there is snow on the ground.
Several years ago, we had a "brush fire" in early August, about a month and
a half after bloom (right about the time we were digging/dividing) and the
plants affected made it just fine, a tad bit shaken but ok.  I will admit,
we watered and added lots of peat and alfalfa around the little stubs.
