Leroy and Jim -- Thanks for the nice words about Coronation Anthem. CA seems
to me to typify both the problems and the promise of rebloom in Siberians. It
far and away has the largest amount of rebloom of any cultivar I grow, and
many people have commented, like you, on seeing an impressive second show. But
it is also frustrating. In our garden, at least, you can have two plants of CA
growing next to each other. One will have a nice rebloom display and the other
will have nothing. That's no different from my experience with other
'rebloomers' but the inconsistency is puzzling, and, of course, makes it
difficult to claim that CA (or any other Siberian) has more than a "tendency"
to rebloom. What we really need is something more dependable. Certainly a goal
worth continuing to work towards.
Also thanks to Jim Wilson for expanding on the "ageratum" effect and
clarifying that it is infrared and not ultraviolet radiation that causes the
reddening effect in photos. My mind was at the wrong end of the spectrum with
UV. Jim, as you get more results with the digital camera, I'd be really
interested to know whether you like the color accuracy. Of course it's pretty
easy to adjust that digitally now after the picture is taken, but even better
if you don't have to tune up your pictures. My brief efforts with a digital
last year (Kodak 280 on loan) were encouraging and I thought the colors were
rendered well -- probably it depends on the camera too. Eventually we will all
be using them, so I hope they do a great job. Bob

Hi Bill & Robert,
Bill do you think that the flowers on CA last longer than others?
In regards to this wonderful cultivar you may be interested to hear this
Robert. Coronation Anthem bloomed nicely at its usual time last spring. Then
about a good 3-4 weeks later a number of Siberians started to push up
another set of bloom stalks. I have had Welcome Return bloom like that but
never so many other Sibs.
CA was incredible, it produced more bloom stalks on the rebloom than the
first bloom and was easily the best rebloom I have ever seen on any Siberian
cultivar. It was absolutely covered and most stunning. I wondered if this
was a chance thing, right conditions, maybe it got fertilized with bear
droppings or something ;)!
Has anyone had a massive rebloom? This happened on a whole 15 foot
established row of CA. The plants appeared healthy for the rest of season
and did not show any signs of bloom-out. I had bloomout on Lucky Lilac the
previous year but it did just barely make it back from a few side shoots. LL
most of the main crown died after extensive rebloom.
Regardless, I enjoyed this second set of blooms immensely, the only
disappointment being that hardly anyone else was able to share the
experience. I have been too cheap to buy a good camera, either digital or a
good slr to take slides with so I failed to capture the moment :(.
I have been looking at second hand refurbished slrs. Does anyone have
suggestions on brands, types, semis, autos? Did not realize macro lens were
so expensive! Over $500 Can. for a used lens...
