Hi Chris,
I usually soak SIB seeds (and the rest of the beardless) for anywhere from
a week to a month depending on how crunched for time I am. Doesn't seem to
make a lot of difference as long as I remember to change the water
frequently.
Used to plant the soaked seeds directly into peat based potting soil prior
to chilling till I got hold of a bad batch of potting soil. Fungus gnats
began hatching as soon as I brought the flats inside! Yikes! What a
disaster.
Last season I just lifted the nylons (seeds with labels are trapped in
these and held down with small rocks to soak) popped them into ziplock bags
and tossed them outside to chill in a protected spot (protected from cats,
dogs, and husband). We were still dropping well below freezing at night.
Chilling was for about a month but could easily have been longer since a
second batch didn't get planted for another month and did just fine.
