Re: seed germination
Nick and Chris,
I'm not high tech when it comes to seed germination. When I harvest the
seeds in the fall, I put them in zip lock bags and store them in the
refrigerator. In January, I sow them in a high peat potting soil. They
are barely covered. I water them well and set them out on the patio in
full fun. They get hard freezes, snow, rain, intense sun and
occasionally a stray animal stepping in the middle of the tray.
Depending on the cross, I get anywhere from 50% to 95% germination by
May. I use this technique for both Siberians and Japanese irises.
Some people go with the refrigerator-sunny window cycle, but I tend to
forget about them once they get back in the refrigerator.
