Re: Fertilizing Siberian Iris
Hi Chris-
I use neutra brew in my planting hole instead of dehydrated cow manure
on new plantings. For top feeding and soil conditioning
effectiveness...neutra brew, dehydrated chicken or cow manure worked into
the soil are probably all good. I have Hoffman chicken manure and I'm
satisfied with it. I doubt its any better than neutra brew. I prefer to use
neutra brew where ever possible mixed in the soil. I'm very high on its
results mixed in the soil. Schueler's sons built raised beds for me and
mixed large amounts of neutra brew with so so top soil and I've had
excellent growth from everything in these beds. TB iris planted in these
beds grew like schreiners rhizomes. Very large.
Alfalfa pellets seem to help all plants as a soil conditioner. I really
don't know why.
My chicken amnure and alfalfa pellets breakdown slowly and I believe
form a tea with water that soaks into the soil gradually with time. I put
mine under a mulch around the plants.
Whatever works for you is fine. I just don't believe that chemical
fertilizers are necesary for siberian iris. However, I have to feed roses
with a chemical fertilizer and foliage feed every other week for good
growth, because there heavy feeders.
