Fw: about I. setosa, etc.

Ellen you are kind. Here goes.

I have a short Iris setosa, grown from seed that was said to be
wild-collected in Alaska. You can see a picture of it in the
display garden at
www.hillkeep.ca

Perhaps one of you can place it right off the bat.

If not, I wonder if anyone can tell me:

1. is there any reason to suppose it can't be from Alaska?
2. if could be from Alaska, could it be Iris setosa var. arctica?

It has recently been suggested to me that var. arctica is a
figment, that all short setosas are really from eastern North
America.

There is of course an iris in the east that is often short; it
has been called both Iris setosa subsp. canadensis and Iris
hookeri. But I have heard tell of short setosas in Siberia, so
the existence of short setosas in Alaska seems plausible to me.
Indeed I would be surprised if there weren't short setosas
everywhere, as part of normal variation.

But this is speculative blather. Does anybody know for sure?

discussed very much (even had a
pic of it in TSI ;-).
