Jim, I know that this does not answer your question, the the USDA maintains 
distribution data (native and naturalized populations) for many species, both 
native and non-native. The information for Iris cristat can be found at:

R. Dennis Hager, in Maryland, where I. cristata is "endangered" (but not in my 
garden)
