Hello. Thank you Joan for these helpful comments. This thread
of proper botanic nomenclature v. the reality of the AIS pubs
and their general purpose prompts me to add a touch reality as
an Editor of one of the AIS section pubs.
**I realize that most of the thread pertains to the checklists
not the general AIS pubs. but here are my thoughts on the
publication of The Society for Siberian Irises.
1. Our primary purpose in publishing 'The Siberian Iris' is to
encourage and assist the general gardener in growing Siberian
irises. We are a popular publication not a scientific
publication.
2. Keeping that goal front and center sometimes takes a little
prodding on my part but most recognize the limits/purpose of our
publication.
3. Any assistance we can give that aids folks in understanding
the scientific/botanical 'facts' re Siberian irises is a bonus.
On the subject of: 'to-cap-or-not-to-cap-and-how-stupid-are-
we-appearing-anyway-to _others_ subject?', I say Whoa, Nellie.
4. I venture that most of the Editors are familiar with the
proper form for botanical nomenclature. But as Joan Cooper
wrote: "...but in a publication where someone might want to scan
for content, I'd use caps so it would be found easily".
5. I use bold caps in naming cultivars in 'The Siberian Iris'.
The reason is quite simple: to easily impart information which
is our goal. Three different people have told me they appreciate
the bold caps which makes it easier to locate a mention of
certain cultivars.
6. "I'm very happy we now can use italics instead of underlining
for species." (Joan Cooper) That is also my goal but I am not
always successful when the deadline crunch is on to triple-check
some proofs but we try and it _will_ become second nature (that
is the hope :-).
The volunteer Editors that comprise the 'staff' of our AIS
section pubs. deserve our thanks and that extends to our
marvelous checklist compilers.
Thanks to you all,
Ellen Gallagher, Editor
'The Siberian Iris'
