dividing Japanese

I must respectfully disagree with the "dividing Japanese in ordinary
garden soil" information. I have several clumps planted near rocks
(which may ameliorate root temp and moisture) and some planted in open
soil that have been in for more than ten years. They bloom their heads
off every year. When I start to divide and begin removing from the
edges they are an overlapping mess but you'd never know it without a
shovel! Most are Hazzard introductions which I find the most
un-finicky.
