No, a new plant doesn't grow directly from the pod. There are seeds in the
pod, let them turn brown which is ripened. Shell, put in plastic bag in
refrigerator and when fall comes plant them in ground covering them about 0.5" and
next spring they will sprout and when about 6" tall separate and line out mark
with label and water them and in 2-3 years you should have plants that will
bloom. They will likely look much like the parents-depends on what pollen the
insects put on the stigma. Hybridizers pick out parents for some characteristics
they desire-earlier blooming, certain colors, bloom shapes, branching, etc. and
then they select the best and discriminating hybridizers may only introduce 1
out of maybe 500 unless it is an outstanding cross. Actually if you do not
remove the pods they will open on their own and come up at the edge of the
mother plant and most often they are in new soil and often inferior and will crowd
out the named cultivar. anna mae
