Fw: Iris insect

Today we received this message from Dick Fulsom who is with the dept. of
agriculture and inspects our garden. When he was here about a month ago, I
gave him the caterpillar that we found eating our siberians. Perhaps the
information will be useful to others who found their siberian buds eaten
this spring.

+AD4- Dear Sharon,
+AD4-
+AD4- The caterpillar from your iris which pupated will not be emerging as it
was
+AD4- parasitized and is now dead. The caterpillar was either a Lithophane
+AD4- species (possibly L. antennata - green fruitworm) or Orthisia hibisci
+AD4- (speckled green fruitworm). These caterpillars are somewhat general bud
and
+AD4- developing fruit feeders so it would not be unusual to find some on iris,
+AD4- but they are not a major pest of iris.

+AD4- Dear Dick,
+AD4- Our Siberians are at peak bloom. They are beautiful. We have some
+AD4- botritis and a new insect that I first noticed it when Siberians were
budded
+AD4- up. The insect was seldom seen but its damage was present. The tip of
the
+AD4- bud was eaten out.
+AD4- We recently found a 2+ACI- caterpillar munching away in one of the flowers.
He
+AD4- is sort of the size of a stretched out cutworm. I have him in a jar for
+AD4- your analysis and will try to think of a place to leave him.
+AD4- I hope that your season is going well.
