Thank you, Bill, for this response and thank you, Ellen, for the 
lengthy and very informative private email.  You have convinced me to 
nix the gypsum and replace it with sphagnum peat moss and alfalfa.

Now how about well aged and composted horse manure/pine shavings?  I'm 
assuming that would make a wonderful amendment for the beardless, as 
well.  Am I correct in that assumption?  I've got TONS of it I'd love 
to put to good use!
