Laurie,
I agree with the others who recommend adding various organic
things instead of gypsum. I think your manure/pine shavings mix would be
OK in moderation, assuming the manure is well aged. The manure should
compensate for the nitrogen the wood shavings would use in decomposing. If
you have clay, though, I'd also recommend adding coarse builder's
sand. Sand is forever; anything organic will break down in two or three
years, leaving your mature clumps growing in mostly clay again.
