{Disarmed} Re: new topic - SI popularity

I think most average backyard gardeners have no idea what a Siberian Iris is. I know I had never even heard of them although I subscribe to several gardening magazines. I discovered them about 6 years ago by accident - Wal-Mart was clearing out plants at $2 for a 6" pot. I picked up a couple even though I had no idea what they were and there was no picture attached. They took 2 more years before they bloomed for me, but once I saw them I was hooked.

This was my pre-computer days. So I had no way of looking anything up to see what they were like I do now. My information came solely from print - and if the magazines didn't mention it then I wasn't familiar with it.

A lot of people don't have computers, so the printed media does need to be approached about doing a feature on the Siberians in order to introduce them to the masses. Maybe even have an expert in the field write an article and submit it together with beautiful photo's - showing clumps as well as close-ups.

Siberians are definitely not an "instant gratification" addition to the garden. But I find they are well worth the wait. I added 6 or 7 new varieties last year and have another 5 or 6 on order this year.

I think popularity would increase if it were better known that Siberian irises are virtually work free, long lived plants.  As the peony, planted well the first time, little more attention is needed.  Water, lots of it, seems to be only factor for me that causes the blooming to vary.  With or without water, the plants do well.  It does take more than one year to establish well and gardeners, as everyone, have little patience these days.
