Chatty report follows:
The last siberian in bloom for me was Purple Prose,
and it faded just withing the last week or so.
Lights of Paris too was one of the last to go. Already
thinking about next year.
Among several young plants, I had a first bloom this
season on 'Shall We Dance'. This one is really a
knock out! The best doer was 'Ottawa' with about
200 flowers on one clump. No exaggeration, though
I didn't (couldn't) count them. I think it's time
to take some pie slices out of some of the older
clumps on various clones, they are simply too
huge, centers thinning, and they don't look as
thrifty and gracefull as they used to. I will
have tons to give to friends and neighbors.
The 'El Nino/La Nina' year was tough on my garden,
with much winter kill (4 ht roses, all the blue fescue,
all the crocosmia, total loss on Anemone 'Whirlwind',
heavy damage on some Miscanthus grasses, and some
other stuff hit hard. This is very unusual for our
area. Unrelated, maybe, was the death of Iris
sib. 'Illini Charm', which showed bizarre mottled
flowers before it expired this season, so I
suspect virus, though this doesn't usually quickly
kill a whole plant. More likely it was a rhizome rot
of some kind. Right next to that plant are 3 clumps of
other clones that are really doing well. A young plant
of Linda Mary also rotted away after bloom this season.
Don't know why, as it is in a well-drained spot and
got normal watering.
Big order of spuria iris coming later this season.
I'd better make some homes available for them.
