I will begin to give a short report on the convention and hopefully some of the rest of you will have some things to add. First, Iowa is a beautiful state! Eastern Iowa has rolling hills and green fields as far as the eye can see. The weather was cool and a bit of a drizzle fell on us on Sunday.
Bloom in the siberians was way past peak due to the very warm spell in early spring. Most clumps had the bloom stalks removed to give a neat appearance to the gardens. We were able to see a little more bloom at the Iowa arboretum on Sunday. Ballots for the most popular named and introduced siberians were tabulated and the winners were (I think): PURPLE SAND, followed by MESA PEARL, SPRINKLES and GULL'S WING. The most popular seedling was S90-37-2 from Marty Schafer and Jan Sacks. This seedling will not be introduced because it had some obvious faults in branching and bud opening sequence. These winners are very late blooming varieties.
All of the gardens which we visited were lovely, landscaped gardens containing fantastic hosta collections. I am a member of the Hosta Society and had never been to a hosta convention so it was a real treat for me to see these extensive collections. My "want list" for hosta is quite long. The host gardeners are to be commended for a job very well done. Each garden was unique and all were well groomed. The gardeners were in control of everything except the weather.
The board meeting was well attended and the minutes will appear in the fall issue of TSI.
Convention reports may not cover how well we all ate at the banquets, in the hotel and in each of the gardens. Iowa hospitality was great.
