Re: Iowa Convention

Carol's report on the Iowa Convention was, I think, right on. One thing she didn't mention, though, is how enjoyable it was to meet the people, a real highlight for us. I think this may be because for a well-known hybridizer and iris figure like Carol Warner it might not have made the same impression as it did on us. But for us to meet people like Carol (we especially enjoyed our walk through the ravine of the Adams garden with her), the Hollingworths, Schafer & Sacks, John Coble. Hal Stahly, and others like them, to have lunch with, to listen to them discuss the relative merits of this or that plant, to hear them discuss their current hybridization work, etc., this was so great. To have what were formerly just names in a catalog become flesh and blood people is one of the highlights of any convention, and this was no exception. Universally, these were friendly people, too, very patient and informative with less-than-experts, just what one hoped for. It was this that !
made the convention worthwhile even though we didn't get to see great beds full of blooming iris. It's the best reason in the world why everyone should get to conventions like this if it is at all possible. People are what make it great, the hitherto unknown as much as the well-known; we met so many delightful folks.
