Re: bug type critters & bloom

From Jan Sacks, where we are still basking in the glow of our siberian bloom
in spite of cold, cloudy, and rainy weather.

We have the same critters and call them climbing cutworms. We asked our
extension entomologist and his says that they are indeed cutworms. We seem
to be cutworm central and have all the different kinds. There are probably
all kinds of nasty chemicals to control them. We are using beneficial
nematodes which have worked very well in the past, but have not been very
successful this year because our weather has been too erratic and cold.
Nematodes aren't active at 40 to 50 degrees. During the one consistent warm
spell we had, we found lots of desicated cutworms. Our source for nematodes
is The Green Spot, Ltd. 93 Priest Rd., Nottingham, NH 03290-6204.
