Re: SR - Informal survey

We grow only Mesa Pearl and Sprinkles. Both are fine iris - beautiful color.
Siberian iris bloom has been tremendous this year, we are just coming down
from peak. Only a few "blind" varities.

I took a slide of a tremendous clump of Mesa Pearl in John Montgomery's
garden the other day. Hope it turns out! JM is a real water miser, but he
has the Siberians well mulched and they love it.

Have found that both Mesa Pearl and Sprinkles are a bit finicky. They don't
do well in our hottest, driest summers. The one year they were doing so
poorly I rescued them and potted them up into pots so I could give them more
H2O. They have come along fine since and now that they are well established
clumps back in the ground again and they seen to weather the adverse
conditions better now.

Definitely want big divisions to start with, if you divide these babies too
small you probably won't be too successful in getting them established. No
problems with winter hardiness here in zone 5, we have dependable snow cover
at the nursery, but a few miles south down the valley the the snow cover is
definitely not reliable.

I don't understand the way plants are chosen for AMs. Or maybe I do, but
there is not enough judges out here, too many back east and not enough out
west? West of the Rockies things are a lot different.

Other top picks for this year: Coronation Anthem (again), Creme Chantilly
(tremendous branching and bud count, simply the best). Windwood Spring.
Fisherman's Morning, Percheron. Too many great blossom displays to really
choose from.
