>Hi: I hesitated composing this message because it's about Japanese irises
and I thought that subject matter on this e mail group was limited to
Siberian irises. But then I saw a couple of messages yesterday about JIs so
I guess it's okay to talk about these.
As you will see (I hope) from the attached photo... taken by a friend with a
digital camera .... I have a beautiful JI growing in a pot that I sunk in
the ground. That was two seasons ago. This is the first year this plant
has blossomed.
This and other JIs grow in full sun in a wet area in one of my gardens. I
grew them in pots because this garden is quite some distance from my
home....and I had the idea that once they blossomed, I would bring them up
to the house so we could enjoy them on the patio.
My question is: can... should... I .... divide this plant at this time?
It's only the first time it bloomed. It is only two years old. I have been
reading McKwen and other experts who say that JIs should be divided every
three or four years. Does that mean I should NOT divide after the second
year. Should I let this one stay in the pot for one more year? (I would
like to have a group of these plants, and not just one. Also, will welcome
advice on dividing the rhizome as I have never divided a JI rhizome.
I am aware the JIs should be planted deeper than the TBIs... but again, I
will welcome all help on this subject.
By the way, is there an e mail group dedicated to JIs ( a Japanese Iris
"sibrob," I guess) as we have this one essentially devoted to Siberians?
All advice will be very much appreciated. I am totally new to JIs so I
welcome your help and expertise.
Thanks
