Dennis,

I have noticed there is some confusion between polygonum and persicaria. I
think what Ellen has is that old horror that is hardy all over the northeast.
The pretty persicarias (Red Dragon is one) are not hardy here. We cannot
keep them over the winter. I had another one with variegated leaves and
millions of bright red flowers which did not survive the winter.

Some time ago there was a shadegarden list thread on just this subject. I
came through that completely confused. I would advise anyone buying one of
these plants to keep an eye on it for at least three years.

The knotweed is never completely eradicated in my opinion. My hsuband
sprayed it a few times and then cut if down with the mower. A railroad track
backs up to that property and the knotwood was able to cross the track.

Herswood sold or perhaps still sells this plant for specific locations. In
his catalog he says you can just put you location on the order form, he will
head it in your direction and it will grow to you.
