Claire,
I think someone has changed the name of Polygonum to Persicaria. I
noticed it in catalogs this year. There is a selected cultivar 'Crimson
Beauty' that is occasionally used as an ornamental in this area. Tony
Avent of Plants Delight Nursery was hawking it several years ago and I
have it in my shade garden. I only bought it after I made him SWEAR that
it would not be invasive. After 6 years, it has not taken over, but I
watch it carefully. When it blooms, it is spectacular. BTW, I have never
seen a seedling from it and I never cut it back in the fall until it is
dead. I noticed that Carol Warner has a nice clump of it in her garden
also.
I have seen knot weeds out of control in other places, but not this
cultivar. There was a cultivar that was given to me 3 years ago that I
ripped out after one growing season, even though I really liked the
foliage.
Now, I have some REAL bamboo that is a problem, but shredded bamboo
makes great long lasting mulch......
