yellow siberians & "beardless" take the show :)

Hi,

'Welfenschatz' is the name of the yellow Siberian that Claire
Peplowski that she and I both purchased from Andy Wheeler. It is
from Marlene Alhburg in Germany (reg. 1990) and the Siberian
checklist 2000 indicates that the British Iris Society
introduced it in 1997.

I mentioned this Sibe to Andy Wheeler today when some of us
visited the Wheeler's garden after the iris show in Western New
England.

To Debby Wheeler - the previous checklist that was at the show
today was in error re 'Coronation Anthem' - it is of course, a
Tet. NOT a diploid. I made the comment when judging that C.A.
was a tet. and someone looked it up in the Sib. checklist which
had it listed as a diploid - the 2000 checklist has it as a tet.
It made no difference in the show placement which, btw,
'Coronation Anthem' made it to the Queen's table.

The show results:

Good day for Sibrob people!

The Best of Show = 'Sarah Tiffney' (hybridized by Jan and Marty)
and exhibited by Andrew Wheeler

1st runner-up = I. gracilipes (exhibited by Debby Wheeler)

2nd runner-up = I. pseudacorus 'Beuron' (my notes omitted the
exhibitor)

3rd runner-up = Salamander Crossing (hybridized by Jan and
Marty)
and exhibited by Steve Smith)

Best arrangement = won by Kathy Marble using two siberians in
the arrangement...one was 'Kamayana'.

Debby Wheeler had some blue ribbons on the arrangement table
along with Kathy Marble - very creative and provocative
arrangements.

It was a day of flat tires and keys getting locked in cars for
two judges from the Sibrob, Bob Sawyer and myself, who found
themselves together judging the Siberians. Not an unhappy
situation and we disagreed on some plants but mostly agreed.
This was my first real judging assignment and I came armed with
my Judge's Manual (which I never opened and finally put it down
on one of the tables).

Debby and the WNEIS did a great job in organizing the show and
had a good crowd attend the job.

Cheers,

Ellen (only Sibes blooming here are: I. typhefolia (still),
Little Blue Sparkler, Snow Prince and Shaker's Prayer which is
blooming at 49" tall and is a sight to behold - plenty of
bearded blooming to keep them company)
