To answer the question about why accept an August shipment. Because it
showed up then and I had not specified that such was not acceptable. I sure
wasn't expecting it then but that was based on the assumption that the
garden owner knew that Northern California was generally very hot in August
and would not do that to a customer. I made the purchase because the cost
was significantly lower than the other suppliers. I was expecting a
September shipment as conventional wisdom around here is that late September
is ideal for planting Siberians. October is actually even better for me. I
just marked it down as a learning experience. Most of that order died. I
think most would have survived at least until the next summer with the pot
in a pan technique. However there were a couple of cultivars in the order
that are doing great.
I learned about the pot in a pan (or kiddy pool) technique from the LA iris
group. It really works great for LAs. I had all of the pots in the sales
area which is full sun. I put the leftover LAs and Siberians in heavy shade
next to a Rodi that gets spray watered routinely. The pots and pans are in
the water spray area. That location and technique solved that pot watering
problem.
