I think that this shows that differences in climate have different
effects on plants.
We accept spring or fall siberian shipments. All spring shipments get
potted and set in a pan in an inch or so of water until new growth takes
hold. Then the pots get transplanted into the garden between September
and mid-October. Once they have started growing in the pots, the success
rate is very good. We do lose a few this way, but they are usually plants
that
resent spring transplant.
Late August and early September shipments get the same treatment, with
even better results. Late September and early October shipments go directly
in the ground, with minimal winter losses.
Our spring (April/May) can be cool, or can have very hot "spikes" in temps.
Late August and early September is still fairly warm, temps in the high 70s
to
low 80s. By early to mid October, we have that fall crispness in the air.
