I know I am late but have been tied up lately. For those with small gardens I do not think spraying is the best method to combat the Bud Fly. Especially for those who do not want to spray poisons in their gardens. Watch your buds closely and if you see a small hole in the side of the bud or when the bud first opens and you see damage remove the bud / blossom. You can break it apart and kill the maggot. That way you are sure you got the culprit or if you don't like that method, just place the buds/blooms in a zip lock bag and dispose of the whole thing. When you destroy the maggot, you break the chain for they do not seem to be very prolific. They arrived in my garden about five or six years ago and I had no idea what they were. It was quite an infestation when Shirley Pope told me what they were. I pretty much cleaned them up by hand in two years. At that time there were over 50 verities of siberian irises in the garden. They will attack bearded irises and JIs as well, though not as often. They have never touched my dwarfs. I think it has allot to do with timing. The Siberians seem to fit their breeding cycle. When the seasons are not normal as they have been here the last few years, the fly will attack what ever is there.
Hope this is of some help
