Dividing vegetatively is how you multiply the same variety. Growing from seed
is the way new plants are created. Just planting your bee pods usually
results in an inferior plant. To get White Swirl it took a bushel of bee pods
to get about 5 worthy plants out of 5000 seedlings. Let me tell you that
takes a lot of space and weeding and selection to get anything worthy of
naming and introducing. Former hybridizer who planted 2000 seeds in 1985 and
transplanted 1000 plants and introduced 9 and mostly I think that is a high
percentage. Bob Hollingworth grows many more seedlings than that each year
and he only introduces a couple / year. Similar to Schafer/Sacks. Many
hybridizers don't have the space to devote. Anna Mae Miller, Kalamazoo, MI
AOL wouldn't let me send this earlier.
