The answer from north of you in Zone 3 where we are still waiting to see a Siberian bloom
except for I. typhifolia is: it depends on the seedling.

I planted some seedlings in June of 1999 and got sparse bloom on most of them in 2001 and
it looks like good bloom this summer. (if it ever comes :-) Some will bloom for the first
time this summer and some of that same batch have yet to show a bloomstalk.

We are colder here than you are and that one zone up, and the subsequent longer growing
season, makes a difference and if the seedlings are vigorous growers, you might (?) see
bloom next year.

seeding with sibs?

Yes, I have. I do have two (that made it) that I planted in the fall of 1998 and they are
growing but no bloom yet, maybe next year or the year after. Our growing season is so
abbreviated that we really need to give the seeds a good start indoors.

I only have one daylily seedling that I got from a bee pod in my old property and started
indoors the winter of 1999. It is growing and increasing and I hope I live to see any
bloom on it. It is still only about 10 inches tall. Only one seedling made the first
winter here. I do not baby any of my plants..I do mulch and that is it. I never cover any
plants for protection against freezes. They live or die on their own. My husband covers
tomatoes and that is it. Last week our neighborhood look funny because of the strange
covers on the plants..mostly vegs.

Ah, I suggest little fences....that is what we use. Altho' the little 4 yr. old boy next
door who runs through the property with my dogs hightails it around the beds without any
fences. Husbands who have big feet when mowing the grass are more of a hazard. :-)

Raining and in the 40s today,

Ellen
