I am in the Central Valley of California and it is not uncommon to have 100
degree weather when I receive my wholesale shipment of Siberians. I have
evolved a system of potting the rhizomes and putting the pots in kiddie
pools. Both of the last two winters have had some heavy rains where the 8"
pots were in 12" of water for extended periods of time. Only had one
cultivar die out in this situation. This past spring I siphoned out most of
the water in March only to have heavy rains refill the pools to
overflowing for about a month into mid April. Siphoned out the water again
and took the pots out of the kiddie pools so the customers did not have to
contend with a drippy pot. Very few died. I just put most of the leftovers
back into the kiddie pools. The few leftovers from last year were and still
are in a pan of water since the end of May 2002. Plants are in great shape.
Needless to say, I am not finding excess water to be a problem.
I do have a couple of questions about spent bloom stalks. When should the
bloom stalks be removed and how is it done.

Hello, my name is Joe. I'm a recent convert to Siberians and while I
know they don't like to sit in water, I was wondering if they would
tolerate being sited near a downspout. In my zone 4, we get variable
amounts of precipitation. I would think they'd enjoy an occasional
soaking. The area I have in mind is well drained. Thanks!
~Joe
