I learned how to remove spent stalks from Carol Warner. You grasp the spent
bloom stalk and pull it toward the *center* of the clump and the whole thing
will (usually) pop right out. It's much easier than cutting each stalk down. You
can do this anytime after the stalk is done blooming.
