Re: Re: Blooms only one day?!

About 10-15 years ago, for 2 years I kept and made a chart of # of days about
150 varieties bloomed. This was very interesting! Not completely, but the
early blooming varieties tended to only bloom for about 5 days then in the
midseason they were blooming 10-15 days on some varieties, late varieties had a bit
shorter bloom number of days. Now, many things can affect this, how much
moisture, how hot like 75 they last longer than 90 in the shade. By now the total
bloom season has been extended by the use of I. typhifolia to make them begin
bloom at least 1 week earlier and the season has been extended with the use of
Esther C.D.M. and some of those varieties begin blooming as late/later than
Esther. Pay attention to Symposium votes, visit gardens for 3 weeks and make
lists and see how you can extend your bloom season, much more important in a
small garden to have 3 siberians, Early, Medium and Late. Some varieties are
sending up later bloomstalks and some repeat but I feel that may be helped by
temperature and moisture. One who didn't irrigate until the plants were fainting
and we were growing on Clay-loam rather than sandy. anna mae
