Hi folks,
I had a chance to stop at Dana Borglum's garden near Geneva, NY,
last Sunday. I live only about 40 miles away, but I have only been there
once before, about 8 years ago when I was just getting interested in
irises. I remember seeing his 'Lake Keuka' when it was recently introduced.
His garden is in farm country, in between two of the Finger Lakes
in a very scenic part of the state. Dana does bearded irises, peonies, and
daylillies in addition to SIberian irises. At the time I visited, the
Siberians were a bit past peak bloom, but there were still enough in bloom
to hold my interest. The peonies, however, were going strong & the whole
property was a sea of color. It's really a breathtaking sight, and BIG. I
was there about an hour and a half. I walked through this year's seedlings
after he had already taken out what he wanted to continue working with, and
still saw several I thought were pretty good. I checked out the bed with
his reselects, and got a look at the ones he's considering for future
introduction. I remember a small flowered red which I liked especially.
Maybe it was just a matter of what was blooming that day, but I
came away with a feeling that he has a special affinity for blues. He has
several terrific light blue blends; I bought two, 'Seneca Moodstone'
and 'Seneca Feather Dancer', which I recommend to you all. Photos don't
convey the complexity of these well; they really draw you into them.
I only had a few minutes to talk with Dana because he was busy
with other customers. We talked a little about 'Ally Oops", which is his
pseudacorus X siberian bee crossed hybrid. For those of you who are
skeptical, a look is pretty convincing. The form is like the siberian
parent, and the color is a complex vein pattern. Mostly it's blue over a
light yellow, with a deep yellow signal. Standards are about 1/2 inch
long, & the styles and standards are blue, but show the influence of the
yellow underneath. The foliage is wide but not as wide as some
pseudacorus, and has a mid-rib.
