Re: systemics

Lana,
I have been using Merit for 2 years. I still see borer damage occasionally in my Japanese irises, however it is rare that I find a live borer. When I do find one, I drench the plant with Cygon 2E.
I have not noticed a change in insect population yet. Although I would like for the pollen thrips to go away, the are as fat and happy as ever. The predators that work on them, praying mantis in particular, are also fat and happy. Fireflies, which are particularly drawn to the nector, are frequently at work before the flower has completely opened. I haven't found any evidence that the bees are affected. Since pollination is usually done by bees, natural pod set could be used as a gross and variable measure of bee activity, allowing for other seasonal factors. Last year, I had a bumper crop. I don't expect a lot of pod set this year because of the weather, but the bees have been quite active.

  Hi Bob and all,
I have started to use Merit this year to try to control the iris borer
and am still seeing some borer damage so have had to spray some Cygon 2E. Have
you tried it and what might it's sucess rate be? Also, the bees have made
several bee pods on some tall bearded with a much better sucess rate than I.
Hmmmm. What about it's effect on the praying mantis as they are my favorite
  insect?
