Ellen,
Today Dick Fulsom from the Dept of Agriculture came to inspect our gardens.
He left with the light green caterpillar that we have been keeping alive in
a screen covered jar. We have been feeding it Siberian iris buds. He will
look it up in his resource books when back in the office. He is planning to
continue to feed it and let it pupate. He will then identify the adult
flying critter.
He wasn't concerned about its danger to our irises. He believes that it is
a pest that found its way to the iris but usually feeds on something else.
I must say that I remember when the orthachaeta bud fly was new to the area.
I gives me a cold chill when I think how its populations have increased.
I will let you know when I hear more about the mysterious insect.
