Re: What's eating my Sib buds???

Possibly, Ellen, but I have a feeling it's the same culprit. Whatever it
is, so far it seems to be working on just one clump at a time. This is
REALLY working my nerves!

I was thinking maybe slugs, but never having dealt with slugs before, I
really don't know what their damage looks like.

It's certainly not impossible that some animal is coming into the Sib bed
at night, but I doubt it could do it without alerting the Bossy Aussies.
We have 5 dogs, and although the 3 geriatrics would likely sleep through
an atomic blast, the Bossy Aussies don't miss so much as a leaf
fluttering to the ground. Between the dogs and the 9 cats, I've never
seen a rabbit on this farm in over 25 yrs, though the rare skunk,
porcupine, woodchuck, muskrat, beaver, and raccoon will wander through.

We have a lot of bear in the surrounding woods, but I've never seen one
cross the hayfields to the house. Again, I can't imagine a bear coming
into the yard without the dogs letting me know ... and probably the
horses, too, since the sib bed borders the barn.

LOTS of deer but no moose (except very rare sightings in this half of the
state). I don't *think* it's deer because the damage is too minimal and
there are no tracks in the bed. I often have substantial deer damage in
my bearded beds in early spring and late fall, but they generally don't
bother them during the summer when their preferred browse if leafed out.
I've never known the deer to bother the Sibs at all.

Going with this slug concept (or some other night-feeding creepy crawly),
would it make sense that a slug would crawl up to the top of a bud, then
eat its way down until it hit stem and quit? These buds seem to be
disappearing directly below the bud, with no stalk taken at all (except
for the half-eaten ones I found this morning), though I can't be certain
of that.

Stumped and steaming,
