Ellen,
Two of the definitive characteristics of the
JI flower are a clear yellow signal and absolutely no haft marks. This
iris fails on both counts. Another distinguishing characteristic of
JI's is the midrib and longitudinal ridges in the foliage. Once
again, from the photo, you can see that they are completely missing.
When Japanese irises became popular in the country,
it was due in no small part to those flower characteristics. Bearded iris
breeders have worked diligently since then to remove haft marks.
I would be curious as to the color of the
pollen--I. ensata pollen is always bright yellow. I work much less with
Siberian irises, but I've never seen Siberian pollen that is bright
yellow.
The clear yellow signal is what I patiently wait
for every year as I tolerate other bearded and beardless irises that simply do
not compare. When my early species seedlings from Russia bloom (that
was over a month ago), I know that my time of year has arrived. I've attached a
photo of that seedling for your comparison.
With some Siberian breeders putting so much
emphasis on "modern form" these days, I can see where you would think this
flower has JI characteristics, but if you go back to some of the Siberians that
were introduced 20 to 40 years ago, I think you could make a similar
observation.
Back to the garden.
