Thank you, Dennis. Obviously, I don't grow many  JI irises (!)  but I did notice that I couldn't see the midrib in the foliage but thought it might be the photo.
 
I can see where you would think this flower has JI characteristics, but if you go back to some of the Siberians that were introduced 20 to 40 years ago, I think you could make a  similar observation.
 
I went out to the garden and looked at some of the older ones I have in bloom.....hmmm. The standards are so small on this one was the sticking point, I guess.

Maybe it is just me but I really think that this iris looks like a JI which might be the reason that the difference is striking when planting next to the Siberians.
