While AZ AP is indeed a product of the hybridizing of Allan Ensminger, who is the granddaddy of variegated iris, I have seen it in many, many gardens around here (the hybridizer's home is only about 150 mi. away), as most people grow it,  and never once with any spots or splashes or broken color.  Always just a pure color, so maybe the soil or environment in other places is responsible for some oddities.
