This spring I noticed one of the columbines (each year it's something new) 
that should be doing well but isn't. Last year it was an Oriental poppy and 
the year before, a Siberian.

Upon digging the plant, I found a colony of "sugar" ants. As much as they 
like to harvest roots, I can imagine they'd be fairly widespread and these 
may have made it 'round the globe.

Have you checked to see that nothing has set up housekeeping beneath the 
clump?
