Re: hybridizing
Hello,
Remember that in simple Mendelian genetics, crossing two alike parents
reproduces a proportion of the parental genotype 'exactly' only with regard to
one 'trait', such as wrinkled pea skins.
In practice with siberians, color and shape and size and texture are all
controlled by a multitude of genes which are statistically impossible to
reproduce even by repeating the same cross hundreds of times. In essence,
there is only one Careless Sally, no duplication of the cross that produced
careless sally could produce the same exact combinations again in less than
millions of tries.
This isn't to say that similar things could not be produced, however, this
opens a whole new area of debate. I personally feel that a nurseryman who sells
every old looking blue siberian as "Caesar's Brother" is committing a crime.
They may be similar (but usually aren't) and the fact is they are just not the
same plant.
What would be the benefit of producing purebred seeds? It takes siberians
three years to grow and bloom from seeds, so why not work with established
divisions?
